Erlene Mennear, Mother of NBC Camps Canada, passed away on December 10, 2010.

Erlene Mennear's life ended Saturday, December 10, 2010 in Sundre, Alberta, Canada. Her legacy lives on in the lives of thousands of boys' and girls'; many who are now men and women.Erlene battled cancer the same way she lived; valiantly to love life and people. The amazing woman is now with all the saints in heaven.

A telephone call was my first introduction to Erlene Mennear. The year was 1984.Erlene invited me to speak to Christian Women's Clubs in five communities in rural Alberta.Erlene also set up as many school assemblies as our time would permit.

Upon arrival at the Calgary airport Erlene greeted me with open arms.Instead of giving a schedule and a map to speaking engagements Erlene drove me from speech to speech. She was present at every assembly and evening program.

On the drive back to the airport Erlene asked this question, I have heard you speak all week but you seldom talked about NBC Camps. I want to know what it would take for us to have you bring your camps to Alberta?.

I said, first, come to Spokane and work in the camp kitchen with my wife, Susie, and observe the evening programs. Erlene loved it!She believed NBC Camps could change lives. Olds College became home for NBC Canada.Erlene made it happen!

Erlene drove countless miles, visited every school in the region and passed out hundreds of brochures. Erlene, nearly by herself, recruited over 150 students to the first camp which was a remarkable achievement.

Erlene received her reward the last night of camp.Basketball players, boys and girls alike, came to open mic to tell fellow campers and coaches how NBC had impacted their lives in positive ways. Erlene and I sat in the last row of the auditorium.I had the privilege of seeing tears of joy flow down Erlene's cheeks.Erlene's passion for youth never faded.Erlene never missed an NBC Camp at Olds. Every summer for 25 years Erlene ran the camp store.Every person at camp knew Erlene Mennear loved them and felt blessed to serve them.

I estimate over 15,000 students have experienced NBC Camps at Olds. During NBC Canada's 20th anniversary we had an Erlene Mennear Night.Any person present who could honestly say NBC Canada changed my life was invited to the mic.It is impossible for me to capture this experience but I can tell you as many as 50 people spoke in very specific terms, thanking Erlene. It was a night to remember. A true tribute to a wonderful woman, Erlene Mennear.

There are three things you can do to do honor Erlene Mennear.

The funeral is at Sundre High School, December 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.Shawn Stetson and I invite you to join us.

If your life has been impacted by NBC Camps Canada email Shawn Stetson with a one paragraph testimony. We would like to present this to the Mennear family.

Go to www.nbccamps.com and make a donation to the Erlene Mennear Scholarship fund and help youth attend NBC Camps.

Please take a moment to thank the Lord for Erlene and her family,

With deep love and appreciation for Erlene I thank you for reading this email,

Fred Crowell
